I worked at Hewlett-Packard(Waltham, MA) for all of my summers while at MIT. Also worked there during IAP. I stayed in my same dorm room all year round for 4 years!

I used to lead bicycle trips in the for the American Youth Hostels (AYH), with groups of 14-17 year old teenagers. The locations were in the US, Canada, and Europe.
Lots of great memories and experiences I'll never forget.
I encourage any student, if they can, to follow their passion and do something fulfilling. You have the rest of your life to work through the summers.

When I came home after freshman year, I found a summer job working for Prof. Wilton Hardy at the University of Hawaii. I worked on underwater acoustics and sonar, that and the following summers and IAP's - Prof. Hardy would call my Mom to find out when I would be coming home from MIT to work for him. I did a lot of programming using punched paper tape, and still remember how cool it was when we got the disk drive that held 2.5 Million Bytes!
Prof Hardy died in an automobile accident in 1975 - many years later I learned that he located the nuclear submarine USS Scorpion that sank in the Atlantic in 1968, using acoustic data.

Wow - that takes all of the stress out of moving! I’ve also stayed in Boston (but in different locations/rooms) during all summers.

One summer I went to Santa Fe and taught middle school math in the Breakthrough Collaborative. It was an incredibly worthwhile experience. I highly recommend that current MIT students look into the program, especially if you believe in the power of education.
