An MIT Alumni Association Publication

MIT alumni and Olympic athletes may seem like two wholly separate groups. But the Institute’s Olympic history stretches from the first modern games in 1896, when American Thomas Curtis 1894 won the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles, to the 2018 Olympics, when AJ Edelman '14 will represent Israel in the men's skeleton race.

In the 100-plus years since the first games, Alumni Association research shows that at least 34 MIT alumni representing 12 countries have qualified for or participated in 11 sports at 28 Olympic Games. MIT's alumni Olympians have win three gold, four silver, and five bronze medals.
