MIT spinoff Boston Dynamics--a robotics company in Waltham, Mass., run by Marc Raibert PhD ’77--was spoofed in an incredibly well-produced two minute video, which is of course viewable on YouTube. Slice readers may want to view the original footage first. The parody video is at the bottom of the page.
BigDog, the mule-sized quadruped robot at the heart of the spoof, is powered by an engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. The robot has four legs that are articulated like an animal’s, with compliant elements to absorb shock and recycle energy. It is about 3 feet long, 2.5 feet tall and weighs 240 lbs. For a paper that summarizes the BigDog program, click here (pdf), or for overview slides click here (pdf).
