MIT was once again named the No. 1 engineering school in the nation as US News & World Report released its 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings on April 9. MIT has held the top spot since 1990, when the magazine first began ranking such programs.

MIT earned the top spot in six individual engineering disciplines:

     • Aerospace / Aeronautical / Astronautical Engineering
     • Chemical Engineering
     • Computer Engineering
     • Electrical / Electronic / Communications Engineering
     • Materials Engineering
     • Mechanical Engineering

MIT’s graduate programs in chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, and physics also ranked first in the country (all tied with other universities). MIT was ranked at No. 2 for earth sciences and No. 3 for biological sciences (tie).

The MIT Sloan School of Management ranked high as well, tying for fifth place in the rankings of best graduate business programs. MIT earned first place in four individual MBA specialties:

     • Business Analytics
     • Information Systems
     • Production/Operations
     • Project Management (tie)

US News & World Report bases its rankings of graduate schools on surveys and data collected from hundreds of degree-granting institutions. More details on the methodology used for each of the various programs ranked is available on the magazine’s website.

Also this week, the QS World University Rankings declared MIT the No. 1 university in the world for the 12th straight year. The organization placed MIT in the No. 1 spot in 11 subject areas for 2024.
