Monthly MITCOB Hike – Breakheart Reservation

  • In-Person

Club of Boston

Saturday, November 16, 10:00am - 1:00pm (America/New_York)

More Info & RSVP

Event Details

If you have trouble registering for this event, click here.

Hike in the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, MA. The hike will follow well marked trails around wetlands and ponds. This will be a ~4-mile, ~2.5-hour hike in a forested area dominated by large pines and oaks around marshes, lakes and the Saugus River. There are numerous scenic stopping points along the hike with views of the lakes.

Breakheart Reservation encompasses 700 acres of pine and oak forest along the Saugus River and surrounding two large ponds. The ponds were created in the 1890s by damming the spring fed marshes. Overflow from the ponds drains into the Saugus River. We can expect to see a variety of forest and water birdlife. We will offer the option along the way to climb a rocky peak (about two hundred feet above the main trail) to get scenic views of the region. On a clear day, the Boston skyline as well as Wachusett Mt to the west are visible from some park hilltops.

The expected start-to-end duration is ~2.5 hours depending on weather and ground-surface conditions. The final trail will be selected closer to the hiking date, adapted to hike-day weather and trail-surface conditions. Weather permitting we will take a lunch break towards the end of the hike.

For more information about the Breakheart Reservation visit: https://www.mass.gov/doc/breakheart-trail-map/download

How to get there from MIT

You can find the entrance of the park (see above map), by using the following address in Google Maps: 177 Forest St, Saugus, MA.

Depending on time of the day, your GPS will probably guide you through one of the following two routes.

Parking and Meeting Point

We will meet at the Visitor Center (see earlier park map) on Saturday, November 16, ready for a 10 am start. The Visitor Center has restrooms. Parking near the Visitor Center and its access road is free but often sparce because many hikers use its very popular Pine Tops Road walking trail. There is a DCR ice rink along the entrance road and it is permissible to park there as well.  Please plan to arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 to ensure that you find parking before the 10 AM start.

What to Bring/Use

•    Camera - Bring your camera or your smartphone, and binoculars
•    Water & Lunch - The walk will be leisurely
•    Bring a picnic lunch
•    Dress comfortably for walking in cold winter weather. Wear water-resistant hiking boots or aggressive sole snickers

Event attendees must acknowledge and understand that: (i) they are not required to participate in this event; and (ii) any participation is voluntary and at their sole risk.

6:00pm-6:45pm Dinner and Networking
6:45pm-8:30pm Presentation and Panel

Hot on the heels of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry being awarded to DeepMind’s AlphaFold – an AI model revolutionizing protein structure prediction – the MIT Club of Northern California is excited to host an event exploring the fast-growing field of AI-driven scientific discovery. This technology is increasingly being designed to power autonomous systems that “close the loop” of the scientific method, promising breakthroughs in industries that are highly regulated, capital-intensive, and challenging to scale.

We’ll hear from experts including:

  • Aditi Krishnapriyan, Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering and EECS at UC Berkeley where she develops Machine Learning methods for the physical sciences.
  • Arash Khajeh, Postdoctoral research scientist at Toyota Research Institute working on leveraging machine learning to create safer batteries.
  • Aldair Gongora, Scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Lab advancing next-generation research platforms including autonomous robots for science.
  • Wen Jie Ong, MIT PhD and Senior Product Manager at NVIDIA leading AI initiatives in chemistry and material science.

This event will be moderated by Alan Gardner (MIT ’05 Course 8; Boston University visiting researcher in autonomous lab infrastructure) and Nabil Laoudji (MIT Sloan ’12 MBA; AI for Science Analyst & Community Builder).

Join us for an exploration into the future of scientific discovery!

Speakers

Aditi Krishnapriyan

Aditi Krishnapriyan is an Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley in Chemical Engineering and EECS, where she develops Machine Learning methods tailored to scientific challenges, with a special focus on physics-inspired models. Robert Caro, author of "The Power Broker", Private Exhibit Tour

MIT Sloan Club of New York

Saturday, November 9, 1:00pm - 2:00pm (America/New_York)

More Info & RSVP

Event Details

Calling all New York, Political Science, and History buffs!

Come join us on a SMALL PRIVATE TOUR of the two new Robert Caro exhibits at the New York Historical Society Library & Museum on Saturday, November 9th from 1:00 - 2:00 pm ET, for up to 10 people!

Robert Caro's The Power Broker at 50

This special installation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of Robert A. Caro's The Power Broker, the monumental work that has been called “surely the greatest book ever written about a city.” This groundbreaking book made known for the first time how Robert Moses, over more than four decades and without ever being elected to public office, amassed power so immense that with it, he shaped New York. The installation explores the story behind the book: how Caro uncovered the falseness behind the image that Moses had so carefully cultivated, and that the press and public believed, to reveal the extent of Moses’ power and the heartbreaking human cost behind his public works.

"Turn Every Page": Inside the Robert A. Caro Archive

The first public exhibition drawn from the archive of the author whose award-winning works on Robert Moses and Lyndon B. Johnson are regarded as masterpieces of modern biography and history, "Turn Every Page" includes never-before-seen highlights from the archive—which New-York Historical acquired in 2019—that provide an intimate view of how Caro started his career and how he worked as a reporter.

What’s Included

This docent-led tour runs for an hour (please arrive by 12:45 pm), however your ticket includes full-day Museum admission, individual vouchers for reduced Regular Admission tickets on a future visit, a 10% discount in the Museum Store, and access to the films We Rise and New York Story (pending availability).

Address

170 Central Park West at Richard Gilder Way (77th Street)

Directions

By subway: Take the B (weekdays only) or C to 81st Street. We're also a 12-minute walk from the 72nd Street station for the 1, 2, and 3 trains at Broadway at 72nd Street.

By bus: The M79 bus travels east/west on West 79th Street across Central Park, with a nearby stop on West 81st Street. Other buses also stop at or nearby, including the M7, M10, M11, M86, and M104 buses.
