At MIT’s ROTC commissioning June 5, General David Petraeus was beaming like a proud father. And he was. As he presided over the commissioning of 12 members of the Class of 2009, he included in that oath his son, Stephen. The new graduate, a political science major, appears to be following his dad’s footsteps not only into the army, but into a larger understanding of world issues. The senior Petraeus holds a PhD in international relations from Princeton.
This commissioning event also kicked off a new affinity group, the MIT Military Alumni/ae Association. The MITMAA aims to engage alumni with military experience or interests. Is that you? Learn more about the MITMAA online.

Having been commissioned in Army ROTC '69 with my lovely wife, Lula, pinning on my bars, we were thrilled to experience the support for our military and these newly commissioned ROTC graduates. Hopefully, our cadets today didn't have to get through picket lines and protestors to get to class and drills. Having retired from the Army with over 30 years of active and reserve service, Lula and I are still actively supporting our troops with CARE packages to Iraq and Afghanistan through the American Legion Post 300, that I command in Maryland.
Brendan McCord has our vote for a Bronze Beaver! Brendan kept us informed of site changes within two hours of the ceremony, so we got into the correct location on time.
Meeting all the Alumni and staff again was great and we hope to be able to assist MIT Military Alumni in the future. I even gave Stephan Petreaus advice about my Infantry Officer Basic Course experience of being a "professional stripper" in about 20 seconds after inadvertently laying on a fire ant mound in a prone ambush position. I was a professional because I was being paid during that rapid strip!

45 years ago, in 1964, commissioning also took place on 11 June. I was commissioned in the morning, married in the afternoon, and graduated next day. 11 June thus has a place in my awareness, beng my wedding anniversary day.
Larry Castro, mentioned in the other article about this event, was in my class at Tech.

Congratulations go to Brendan McCord for organizing the MITMAA and this event. Brendan's on course for a Bronze Beaver!
