Actually, Woolworth's was still in Central Square until relatively recently. A web search suggests that it closed in October, 1997 (see

Woolworth's was certainly an active part of my shopping when I was a student in the early 80's, for everything from kitchenware to cheap clothing.

In searching, I found a great paper about Central Square written by a former MIT student:

While Kendall Square is almost unrecognizable, what's pretty impressive is how similar Cambridge looks to what we're familiar with. Outside of that Woolworth's, it looks like another trip through Central Square, just with vintage cars.
