Take a trip down memory lane. In this video, "View from the Road," you'll see what campus, Cambridge, and Boston looked like during one day in 1958. No Big Dig!

Professor Kevin Lynch BCP '47 produced this high-speed film as part of his studies into the theory of city form and of human perceptions of the city.

This runs just too fast for me, I can hardly pick out any landmarks. Is there a slower version?

Actually, Woolworth's was still in Central Square until relatively recently. A web search suggests that it closed in October, 1997 (see http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1997/10/8/woolworth-closing-marks-end-of-an/).

Woolworth's was certainly an active part of my shopping when I was a student in the early 80's, for everything from kitchenware to cheap clothing.

In searching, I found a great paper about Central Square written by a former MIT student: http://www.rmurthy.com/CentralSquare1_rmurthy.pdf

While Kendall Square is almost unrecognizable, what's pretty impressive is how similar Cambridge looks to what we're familiar with. Outside of that Woolworth's, it looks like another trip through Central Square, just with vintage cars.

Not that we're aware of. Sorry.
