US News Ranks MIT the No. 1 Graduate Engineering School

US News and World Report once again declared MIT the best graduate engineering school in the nation when it released its annual rankings of graduate programs on April 25. MIT has held the No. 1 spot since 1990, when the magazine first began ranking such programs. 

MIT programs also earned the top spot (tied with various other schools) in computer science, chemistry, economics, mathematics, and physics.

Among individual engineering disciplines, MIT finished first in six areas:

In addition, the publication’s 2023–2024 list of best graduate schools awarded the MIT Sloan School of Management the No. 4 spot for best business school. In the rankings of individual MBA specialties, MIT placed No. 1 in three areas:

According to the magazine, it determines its rankings in these areas based on two types of data: expert opinion about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, and students.

The US News and World Report rankings follow the recent release of the annual world university rankings announced by Quacquarelli Symonds, which ranked MIT as the No. 1 university in the world for the 11th year in a row.

US News releases its undergraduate rankings in the fall. Last September, it ranked MIT the No. 2 university in the nation.
