Still looking for a good summer read? Here are lists of some sci-fi/fantasy books you might have missed, courtesy of library volunteers for the MIT Science Fiction Society. I asked them for two categories of books: recently published novels destined to become classics and overlooked gems. The term "overlooked" proved somewhat controversial—how ignored does a book have to be? And obviously these are subjective opinions. Regardless, there might be some books here you have yet to enjoy. And please, share your picks for must-read books in the comments.

Recent classics-to-be

The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 1) by Patrick Rothfuss

Books by Ken MacLeod and Charlie Stross

Overlooked gems

The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox by Barry Hughart

The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach

The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie

Anything by Martha Wells

The following were of questionable "overlooked" status:

Cyteen by C.J. Cherryh

Anything by Iain Banks

The Dragon Waiting : A Masque of History by John M. Ford

Heroics for Beginners by John Moore

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Carve the Sky by Alexander Jablokov

What about books by Jacqueline Carey? (like the Kushiel's Legacy series?)
