When Ellen Swallow Richards was admitted to MIT in December 1870, she forged ahead, earning her SB in Chemistry on May 31, 1873. During MIT's early years, there were no commencement ceremonies. The MIT Faculty Committee simply voted and recorded the names of those who had completed their degree requirements.
