Watch PBS’s Turmoil & Triumph: the George Shultz Years

Monday night, you can prop up your feet and watch a PBS documentary on the life and influence of former U.S. Secretary of State George P. Shultz PhD ’49. The three-part PBS series, which aired its first part on  July 12, will continue over the next two Mondays from 10-11 p.m. Don’t despair if you missed the first part, though, because the Turmoil & Triumph website is stocked with video, articles, and it covers topics from his scholarship to his illustrious career as a statesman. PBS notes that the series offers a rare view into the inner workings of the Reagan White House, capturing the intrigue and infighting as advisors vie for the ear of the President over Iran/Contra and the Star Wars Strategic Defense Initiative, and other controversial initiatives. Interviews with Shultz, other cabinet members, journalists and historians bring these dramatic times to life. Shultz has a long and continuing MIT history as well. After earning a PhD in economics, he stayed at MIT as a professor in the Department of Economics and the MIT Sloan School of Management from 1948 to 1957. Today he serves as the chairman of the MIT Energy Initiative's External Advisory Board.
