Seeing the MIT Seal Up Close--A Classy Gift

There’s an addition to campus in Lobby 7—a bronze replica of the MIT seal and a plaque, a gift of the Class of 2003. The class chose this as the class project during senior year and, after years of fundraising, the seal—30” diameter x 1-1/2” thick—and class plaque were installed in April.

The class selected the project because “the seal embodies the principles of MIT and having it displayed in a heavily trafficked area will provide a daily reminder to students, faculty, and staff and what it means to be at MIT.” A class blog post documents the installation and history of the project.

The Institute Archives offers a brief background on the seal.

I'm glad this project was completed after the Senior Gift Committee started it in Fall 2002. The Committee felt it was important to honor this timeless symbol in a prominent location, and both Lobby 10 and Lobby 7 were considered. We're glad the administration agreed with us and allowed us to display our gift, and as the former Chairman of the Committee, I'm thankful the alumni association continued to drive donations to complete this project.

We are so proud of our Class Seal! Also, thank you so much, "Slice of MIT," for giving a shout out to our class blog.

The seal really is a work of art. Going to check out the installation and history as well now.

Thanks
