Befitting an Institute that values metrics, the Alumni Association is measuring how alumni interact with MIT virtually, philanthropically, and in face-to-face gatherings. We call these different activities "engagement"—and the sweet spot of engagement is when alumni participate in all three types of activities. The Association's Year in Review for fiscal year 2012, which ended June 30, reports that at least half of MIT graduates are participating in one of these activities.

Of course, the Association does not know every time alumni visit campus or the MIT website, but capturing some numbers helps us figure out what alumni like to do and how they like to connect with the Institute and one another.

The Year in Review also links to lists of two huge groups of active alumni—the 10,913 who volunteered for clubs, classes, or projects such as mentoring students, and the 41,069 who helped the Institute stay strong by making a gift to MIT in FY12

In the Year in Review highlights, you can learn about the many ways alumni volunteer and get involved at MIT—and think about how you would like to expand your engagement. Here are some highlights:

  • Association events increased 17 percent with strong attendance numbers—33,776 attendees went to 1,045 events worldwide.
  • The Association’s website drew more than 3.5 million page views, with a 257% leap in those visiting the site from mobile devices.
  • The Student/Alumni Externship Program broke records with 294 students working with alumni in January. Pictured above: students and alumni at the Boston-based start-up Nyx Devices.
  • Quick Facts: Of the 126,684-strong alumni body, 75% of alumni hold graduate MIT degrees; 49% earned an MIT undergraduate degree; and 24 percent earned both.
