Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate?
All MIT alumni, graduate and undergraduate.
How are we defining volunteerism?
We will count work done for the benefit of others without any direct financial, material, or personal compensation or gain.
What counts as volunteer service?
We will honor all volunteer service during the year if the activity(ies) are externally focused and have an impact outside the MIT community. We encourage people to plan activities and projects with fellow MIT alumni, friends, students, and families, to give back to their local communities while strengthening ties with fellow members of the MIT community. Please note that as a not-for-profit institution, MIT may not directly or indirectly engage in or sponsor any political activity, including activity which supports or opposes any political party, candidate, or group of candidates for political office, and that political and/or election-related activities will not count as "volunteer service" for the purposes of this program. Hours served on a nonprofit board count!
Does my volunteer service to MIT count?
We are grateful to all of our MIT volunteers who give their time and talent and energy to the Institute. We will honor volunteer hours focused outside of MIT to a recognized non-profit group or agency in order to have maximum impact on our world outside of the MIT community. For example, volunteering as an Educational Counselor does not count.
If my family volunteers, can I count all of family's hours?
Yes, if you are working on a project that is having impact in a community.
Can I enter hours for donating clothing and other items (non-monetary)?
Yes, you can log one hour per unit or one hour per pound of clothing.
Can I volunteer by donating blood to the American Red Cross?
Absolutely! Find a location near you to donate blood by visiting the American Red Cross' website.
Can I volunteer by running a marathon that helps the community?
Yes! Be sure to count the hours you train as well.
