Join MIT, Harvard, and Yale alumni in giving back to the Northeast Ohio community! We'll help the non-profit Chair-ity prepare for their move to a new location

Chair-ity provides essential support to youth aging out of the foster care system by collecting and redistributing furniture to help furnish their first apartments. The organization addresses a critical gap in resources, ensuring that these young adults, who often leave foster care with little to no belongings, can turn their apartments into welcoming homes. By providing beds, tables, sofas, and other necessities, Chair-ity helps these individuals transition into independence with dignity and a sense of stability. Activities: Chair-ity has a variety of ways to help depending on volunteers' abilities. Activities could include organizing, assembling racking, cleaning items, photographing items for inventory, and moving items (many items are relatively light and do not require considerable strenght, such as lamps and kitchen items).
Minimum age: Volunteers should be at least 8 years old, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Register to participate in a live interactive event with Emma Teng, Professor of Asian Civilizations at MIT.
Prof. Teng will share her research on transpacific mixed families and take questions from alumni.
In an earlier era of globalization, growing US-China trade, missionary endeavors, transpacific educational exchanges and migration led to the formation of mixed Chinese-Western families, challenging taboos against interracial marriage at the time. Yet, their histories have often been hidden in service to these taboos. What lessons can we learn from the hidden histories of transpacific mixed families and their lived experiences in the US, China and Hong Kong bridging cultural and national differences?

About the Speaker
Emma J. Teng is the T.T. and Wei Fong Chao Professor of Asian Civilizations at MIT. She is the author of Taiwan's Imagined Geography: Chinese Colonial Travel Writing and Pictures, 1683-1895 (2004) and Eurasian: Mixed Identities in the United States, China and Hong Kong, 1842-1943 (2013). Tour of the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics

Free, Registration will open on May 1, Attendance is limited to 25.
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) was founded in the fall of 1970. The mission of the Laboratory was to investigate the interaction of intense laser radiation with matter. LLE was established as a multidisciplinary teaching and research center for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The Laboratory has a five-fold mission:
- 1. To conduct implosion experiments and basic physics experiments in support of the National Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) program.
- 2. To develop new laser and materials technologies.
- 3. To provide graduate and undergraduate education in electro-optics, high-power lasers, high-energy-density physics, plasma physics, and nuclear fusion technology.
- 4. To operate the National Laser Users' Facility.
- 5. To conduct research and development in advanced technology related to high-energy-density phenomena.
