Join us Saturday Morning at 8:30 am for a hike through our local gem,  Torrey Pines State Preserve. 

Parking in the Preserve on weekends is $20, so we will use free street parking at 11101 N Torrey Pines Place, in the Science Park Area. 

We will walk along the golf course into the Preserve. 

We will walk down the South Fork Trail and Broken Hill Trail down to the Beach. 

There is a low tide a 9:49 AM so we should be able to walk onto the sand. 

We will walk up the Beach trail, visit the Lodge and head back to our cars.

Refreshments will be supplied by the MIT Club of San Diego after the walk. 

There are port a potties available at the top of the beach trail. 

Sorry, but dogs are not allowed. 

Walking to the Guy Fleming Trail will be an option available for those not eager to climb the 357 foot hill. 

NOTE: There will not be an MIT Club walking event in June due to a conflict with the MIT Club Annual Picnic. Please attend the picnic.

There will not be an MIT Club walking event in July due to a conflict with Independence Day Weekend.

There should be an walking event Saturday August 2nd.

The Penn Club of San Diego is thrilled to host a Book Talk and Q&A with local author and Penn Nursing alumna, Muffy Walker. Join fellow Ivy Alumni for an engaging discussion on the journey of writing a debut novel, navigating the publishing world, and exploring key excerpts from her book. Muffy Walker will share how her extensive experience as a psychiatric nurse inspired her to craft a compelling work of fiction infused with real-world themes. The conversation will delve into mental health issues, genome sequencing, and more. The evening will conclude with an interactive audience discussion panel. More about the novel here.

About the author Muffy Walker

Muffy Walker was born and raised outside of Philadelphia, PA. In 1983, Walker graduated with a Master's of Science in Psychiatric Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked in the mental health field for over 18 years until she moved to California when she obtained her MBA with a focus in marketing from the University of California-Irvine.

Walker has owned several companies both for and not for profit and is the co- founder of International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF). She has served on the Board for the American Brain Coalition, Advisory Council for Children's Mental Health Network, Editorial Board for bp Magazine, and the Community Engagement Task Force for International Society for Bipolar Disorders and was Co-Chair for the launch of World Bipolar Day.

Walker has dedicated over three decades of her life championing the education of the public about mental illness and has won numerous awards for her advocacy work including the National Council Behavioral Health IMPACT Award, the International Society for Bipolar Disorder’s most highly coveted Mogens Schou Award, Salvation Army Woman of Dedication, YWCA Visionary Award, YWCA Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN Award), Leonard Simpson Women Who Give Back Award, and the Emily Bagnall Philanthropy Award.

She has written extensively on mental health topics, contributing chapters, guides, and newspaper articles to the field. Now, she is channeling that experience into writing fiction, weaving together her professional expertise and personal passions to create stories that entertain while offering insights into complex, real-world issues. Her debut novel, Memory Weavers, published by Koehler Books launches April 8. Her goal is to educate readers in a way that feels natural, engaging, and thought-provoking.


When not writing, Walker loves exploring exotic destinations, savoring decadent chocolate desserts, and spending time with her dogs. She is also an avid pickleball player and enjoys the strategy and fun of Mah Jong.

Want to learn to salsa & bachata while meeting fellow alumni? Join MIT10 for a Thursday night bachata class followed by social dancing at Cielo Rooftop Lounge (*Trying a new venue!*) on May 8! All levels welcome, the lessons are very beginner friendly!

There is a $15 cover fee (paid at the door), which covers the class and open social dance afterwards. There will be bar service. Parking is available on the street and garages downtown nearby the venue.

Plan to meet outside the door at 6:45 pm. We'll wait there as a group and go up before class starts at 7:00 pm. If you're running late just meet us inside (5th floor). After the 1-hour class there will be social dancing until late, so stay as long as you want to dance!

Why do Americans pay more than citizens of any other country for health care and yet have, at best, mediocre health outcomes? Dr. Edward Hoffer will discuss this topic, and suggest both global solutions and practical things you can do to pay less and get better care.

 

Our speaker, Edward Hoffer MD

Edward Hoffer MD is a graduate of MIT and Harvard Medical School and did his residency and fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Hoffer has held faculty academic appointments at Harvard, the University of Massachusetts, and Boston University. He has also held appointments at several Boston hospitals (Peter Bent Brigham, Beth Israel, Boston Hospital for Women), at many Boston metro-west hospitals (in Worcestor, Natick, and Framingham), and at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He has either authored or co-authored over 80 publications, including 8 books and dozens of refereed journal articles, many of which deal with the application of computers to various aspects of medicine and with issues within the American healthcare system (insurance, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, etc.).

For 45 years he combined clinical practice of Internal Medicine and Cardiology with research on the applications of computers and AI to medical care, and continues to work half-time at the MGH Lab of Computer Science.

He has written and lectured extensively on the problems of the American healthcare "non-system."

We will be returning to Alberto's Ristorante in Hyannis because of the many rave reviews we received for the food and service in the past.

There will be a cash bar and we will be offering the same entrees as before (gluten-free is available upon request). All meals include a house salad and Tartuffo dessert.

Come and enjoy the great San Diego outdoors at San Dieguito Park with other MIT alums, family, kids and friends at our annual meeting and picnic.

 

Schedule           11:30am - 12:00pm   EC meeting   Educational Counselors and potential ECs will meet for an information/training session. They will discuss the current admissions year, the process, reflect with other ECs, etc. You do not need to register if you plan to come just for this session. Please send an email to Karen des Jardins at kdj@alum.mit.edu if you plan to join.
    12:00pm   Lunch begins   Lunch is available for those who have paid the fee.
    1:00 - 1:05pm   Annual Meeting   A short meeting for members to vote on the proposed slate of incoming board members and to discuss any questions members might have.
    1:05 - 3:00pm   Picnic continues   The event will end at 3:00. But everyone is welcome to stay and enjoy the park until it closes at sunset.
 

 

There is no fee to simply attend (except parking, see below). All who register and pay will enjoy catered food.

The Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project

The Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project

Wampanoag was the language spoken by the indiginous people living in this region when the Pilgrims arrived in 1620.

After a couple hundred years of colonial laws, wars, and diseases, hundreds of Wampanoag tribes were reduced to four small fragmented communities, and the last people for whom Wampanoag was their first language passed away in the mid 1850's. It took only a few more generations for all traces of spoken Wampanoag to completely fade away, with the decendants speaking only English after that.

Our speaker, Jessie (Little Doe) Baird

In the early 1990's our speaker, Jessie (Little Doe) Baird, had dreams in which people were speaking in an unfamiliar language, and soon after that she thought that the language might be Wampanoag, the language spoken by her ancestors.

This inspired her to start researching everything she could find out about the original Wampanoag language, and in 1993 she founded the Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project with the long-term goal of revitalizing the language, which had not be spoken for seven generations, for the people now living within the remaining Wampanoag tribes.

Because something like that had never been done before, there were many who thought that it was not even possible. But Jessie was undeterred. In her quest, she gained admission to MIT where she learned how to apply modern linguistic techniques coupled with historical records in order to understand original Wampanoag grammar and to create a dictionary of 10,000 Wampanoag words. (And she did all this while commuting between her home on Cape Cod and Cambridge while also raising four children).

For this seminal work, Jessie was granted a Masters in Linguistic Science from MIT in 2000.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Jessie then founded the Wampanoag Language School. Over the years -- and after much fund raising, curriculum development, and training of additional linguists and teachers -- there are now hundreds of members of today's Wampanoag tribes who can speak Wampanoag, from beginners to people who are fully fluent.

In recognition of all these brilliant achievements ...

  • In 2010, Jessie was honored with a MacArthor Fellowship (a.k.a MacArthor Genius Award).
  • In 2017, Jessie received and Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences from Yale University.
  • In 2020, Jessie was named one of USA Today's "Woman of the Century."
  • Jessie and her work on Wampanoag language reconstruction are the subject of a PBS documentary: We Still Live Here: Âs Nutayuneân, directed by Anne Makepeace.

Jessie also serves as the vice-chairwoman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council

 

Our Annual Education Event

Prior to our presentation, Carol Bogin, our club's VP for Education Programs, will briefly report about all the education activities and awards for this year, highlighting the many ways we support the MIT Club of Cape Cod's primary missions to promote STEM education on the Cape and the Islands, including:

  • The Lynn Bruneau Scholarship, which is awarded to all Cape Cod high school seniors matriculating into MIT.
     
  • $600 mini grants, primarily awarded to Cape Cod secondary schools, for STEM-related projects.
     
  • STEM Book Awards for the top STEM juniors at 17 Cape Cod schools, consisting of a commendation letter, a certificate suitable for framing, the book "Nightwork" (an illustrated collection of memorable MIT Hacks) and a $100 Amazon gift card with which the awardee can use to purchase a number of STEM-related books from Amazon.
     
  • Full sponsorship for all Cape Cod teacher accepted into MIT's SEPT (Science and Engineering Program for Teachers) summer program.

 

Lunch at Alberto's Ristorante

We will be returning to Alberto's Ristorante in Hyannis because of the many rave reviews we received for the food and service in the past.

There will be a cash bar and we will be offering the same entrees as before (gluten-free is available upon request). All meals include a house salad and Tartuffo dessert.

  • Chicken Parmagian - Breaded chicken cutlet topped with tomato sauce and melted cheese. Served with penne pasta.

  • Pork Osso Bucco - Pork shank cooked with celery, carrots, and onions in a Barolo wine sauce. Served with mashed potatoes broccoli.

  • Baked Scrod - Fresh baked scrod with seasoned breadcrumbs, white wine, and lemon touch of butter. Served with pasta and vegetables.

  • Farcite Napoletana (vegetarian) - Eggplant rolled & stuffed with ricotta cheese, baked with San Marzano plum tomato sauce & three cheeses. Served with penne pasta.

Learn More 2025-06-11 21:00:00 2025-06-12 00:30:00 UTC The Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project The Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project Wampanoag was the language spoken by the indiginous people living in this region when the Pilgrims arrived in 1620. After a couple hundred years of colonial laws, wars, and diseases, hundreds of Wampanoag tribes were reduced to four small fragmented communities, and the last people for whom Wampanoag was their first language passed away in the mid 1850's. It took only a few more generations for all traces of spoken Wampanoag to completely fade away, with the decendants speaking only English after that. Our speaker, Jessie (Little Doe) Baird In the early 1990's our speaker, Jessie (Little Doe) Baird, had dreams in which people were speaking in an unfamiliar language, and soon after that she thought that the language might be Wampanoag, the language spoken by her ancestors. This inspired her to start researching everything she could find out about the original Wampanoag language, and in 1993 she founded the Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project with the long-term goal of revitalizing the language, which had not be spoken for seven generations, for the people now living within the remaining Wampanoag tribes. Because something like that had never been done before, there were many who thought that it was not even possible. But Jessie was undeterred. In her quest, she gained admission to MIT where she learned how to apply modern linguistic techniques coupled with historical records in order to understand original Wampanoag grammar and to create a dictionary of 10,000 Wampanoag words. (And she did all this while commuting between her home on Cape Cod and Cambridge while also raising four children). For this seminal work, Jessie was granted a Masters in Linguistic Science from MIT in 2000. Not one to rest on her laurels, Jessie then founded the Wampanoag Language School.
