Designing Your Retirement: An Evidence-based Path to a Happy, Healthy, and Fulfilling Retirement

Have you considered how to optimize the last 116,800 hours of life during your retirement?

Trained as an engineer and nearing the end of his career as a software developer and physician, Hayward Zwerling, M.D. wanted to know:

What should I do to ensure I have a happy, healthy, and fulfilling retirement?

After reading more than 70 scientific publications and gathering insights from numerous experts and his patients, Dr. Zwerling developed the Designing Your Retirement methodology—a roadmap to a better retirement. This lecture will not discuss the financial aspects of retirement.

In the first hour, Dr. Zwerling will share the latest medical and scientific evidence, which logically culminate in six retirement “objectives” that are the foundation for The Strategic Retirement Plan.

In the subsequent 30 minutes you will learn how to design a Tactical Plan to enact Your Strategic Retirement Plan, thus maximizing the probability you will have a happy, healthy, and fulfilling retirement.

The optional final 30 minutes will be an interactive session to discuss questions and brainstorm ways to optimize our retirement.

A copy of the syllabus and prior attendee comments can be obtained at: IHaveAnIdea.us/DesigningYourRetirement/

Should the venue capacity be reached, you can be added to the waitlist by emailing your contact information to: HZMD@me.com.

Light snacks will be available.

More Info & RSVP

Event Details

Join researchers from MIT’s K. Lisa Yang Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Center as they share cutting-edge water and agriculture projects underway across the MENA region. Focused on creating solutions that can feed a growing society in the face of water stress, climate change, and energy limitations, the Yang GEAR Center has realized low-cost, renewable-powered technologies in drip irrigation and desalination that dramatically cut water and energy use while being cost effective for farmers. Now it’s time to bring them to market! Learn how the center’s pioneering approach is building resilience across the region—and how MIT alumni and friends can help drive lasting impact for low-resource communities across MENA.

Amos Winter
Germeshausen Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Director, K. Lisa Yang GEAR Center at MIT
Amos Winter leads MIT’s Yang GEAR Center, where he and his team engineer bold, high-performance, low-cost technologies that tackle critical challenges in water, agriculture, health, and energy in resource-limited settings. His work blends deep technical expertise with user-centered design and global partnerships to deliver real-world impact. Winter earned his PhD in MIT’s Mechanical Engineering Department before joining the faculty in 2012.

Mohamed Naouri
Hock E. Tan Postdoctoral Fellow, K. Lisa Yang GEAR Center at MIT
Mohamed Naouri designs smart, sustainable irrigation and desalination systems for smallholder farmers in North Africa and beyond. With a background in agricultural sciences and hands-on engineering and policy experience across Africa, Asia, and Canada, he brings a deep commitment to water access, farmer-led innovation, and scalable solutions tailored to local needs. Naouri holds dual PhDs from L'École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique d'Alger and Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II.

Fiona Grant
PhD candidate, Mechanical Engineering
Fiona Grant is a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering focused on designing solar-powered drip irrigation systems that meet the needs of farmers in resource-constrained and water-stressed environments. Before joining the Yang GEAR Center, she earned her SB and SM degrees in mechanical engineering at MIT. Grant has previously conducted research on small-scale desalination for villages in India, underwater vehicle propulsion, and the effects of dust deposition on solar plant production in the Atacama Desert. Her research interests include system optimization, controls, and human-centered design, and she is excited about bringing a multi-disciplinary engineering approach to address global climate challenges.

Join fellow MIT alumni and the author, Jason M. Barr, for a virtual discussion of his book Cities in the Sky: The Quest to Build the World's Tallest Skyscrapers on Thursday, May 22, at 7PMDr. Barr  will join us for the first 45 minutes for an engaging Q&A.  Be sure to bring your questions!

The world’s skyscrapers have brought us awe and wonder, and yet they remain controversial—for their high costs, shadows, and overt grandiosity. But, decade by decade, they keep getting higher and higher. What is driving this global building spree of epic proportions? In Cities in the Sky, author Jason Barr  explains why they appeal to cities and nations, how they get financed, why they succeed economically, and how they change a city’s skyline and enable the world’s greatest metropolises to thrive in the 21st century.

From the Empire State Building (1,250 feet) to the Shanghai Tower (2,073 feet) and everywhere in between, Barr explains the unique architectural and engineering efforts that led to the creation of each structure. Along the way, he visits and unpacks some surprising myths about the earliest skyscrapers and the growth of American skylines after World War II, which incorporated a new suite of technologies that spread to the rest of the world in the 1990s. Barr also explores why London banned skyscrapers at the end of the 19th century but then embraced them in the 21st and explains how Hong Kong created the densest cluster of skyscrapers on the planet. Also covered is the dramatic result of China’s “skyscraper fever” and then on to the Arabian Peninsula to see what drove Dubai to build the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which at 2,717 feet, is higher than the new One World Trade Center in New York by three football fields.

Filled with fascinating details, Cities in the Sky “masterfully weaves together the history, myths, economics, and engineering behind the most iconic structures across the world’s skylines”  (Grady Hillhouse, creator of Practical Engineering).

The Minuteman Library network in the Boston area has three copies of this book. If you are unable to check out a copy,  BookFinder.com is a great resource for finding gently used, less expensive copies of this book.

A successful career in STEMM requires more than an advanced degree and lots of publications.

The nonprofit Epistimi, Inc. was founded in 2021 to provide the MIT LEAPS course, Leading Yourself and Others, to women in STEMM globally. In 2023, the MIT LEAPS Program was awarded the Irwin Sizer Award for the “Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education” by the MIT Graduate Student Council.

Epistimi has partnered with the American College of Greece (ACG) and together we are happy to offer our one-week Epistimi-ACG leadership workshop during May 26-30, 2025 in Athens, Greece. The 5-day in-person workshop will be followed by six one hour Zoom meetings (every two weeks) in order to complete the personal work assignments. This program is for graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, assistant professors or any other early career professional woman in STEMM.

Workshop is limited to 30 participants. There will be three cohorts:

1. Energy, Climate and Sustainability

Note: This is session #2 of 2. No need to attend both.

Come learn more about and join the Ivy+ Alumni Softball League! Join other interested players from Ivy+ schools and MIT and see if we can field an MIT or mixed-school team!

The Ivy+ Alumni Coed Softball League was founded in the 1980s to provide the opportunity for alumni of all ages and ability, male and female, to meet and network with other Ivy+ alum---this networking event just happens to take place on a softball field!  It was decided that a restricted flight ball was to be used, with the goal being for everyone to get a hit and for everyone to have fun!  A 4-swing rule was set, teams pitched to themselves with a defensive pitcher standing within 6–8 feet of the offensive pitcher to field the "beginner hits," seven men and three women were to be on the field at all times, and getting together socially after the game was encouraged.
