Join us for a ~4.5 mile hike in the West part of the Middlesex FELLS Reservation. Located ~10 miles from MIT, the FELLS Reservation is a natural treasure, offering beautiful sceneries and providing an important drinking water supply for many residents north of Boston.

The Fells Reservation spans ~2,200-acres that include a diverse landscape of forest, wetlands, and hills, something all too rare in our urban/suburban landscape. This range of habitat sustains a variety of wildlife including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds.

Approximate Trail Map
Our trail will loop around the FELLS North Reservoir along wooded areas with a mildly undulating terrain, offering frequent vistas of both North and Middle Reservoirs. We will have a brief lunch break at one of the scenic points, so, please bring a sandwich or snack and drinking water.

The expected start-to-end duration is 2 to 2.5 hours depending on weather and ground-surface conditions. The final trail will be selected closer to the hiking date, adapted to updated hike-day weather conditions and expected trail-surface conditions.

Meeting Point and Parking
The meeting point will be at the entrance to Middlesex FELLS Reservation across the street from 2 Hillcrest Pkwy, Winchester MA. On-street free parking is available along the entire length of Hillcrest Pkwy. You should be able to find a spot reasonably close to the meeting point between 2 and 40 Hillcrest Pkwy. Please park on the Reservoir side of the street only.

What to Bring/Use

Winter is behind us, May might be very hot at times but weather can often turn cool and shoulder-season gear is advisable. So, please consider bringing the following items to the hike:

1.    Comfortable, short and long sleeve shirts
2.    Hiking Boots or cross country sneakers
3.    Camera and binoculars
4.    Hat and sun block, as needed
5.    Water & Snack or Lunch

MIT CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PRESENTS:
MITCSC Monthly Technical Book Club

We will continue discussion on D&P Chapter IX (Geodesics) and prior topics, including Anand's solution to exercise VIII.2.1.

The Technical Book Club is reading "Tensor Geometry" by Dodson and Poston, a differential geometry-centric introduction to general relativity.  We will continue to make use of Needham's "Visual Differential Geometry & Forms" and Tu's "Differential Geometry" to elucidate D&P's Chapter IX (Geodesics).  As we get deeper into D&P, we find that the quality of exposition is slipping, so we rely more heavily on other texts to elucidate the details.  Discussion on topics covered in prior meetings is always welcomed.  One of our aims with this meeting will be to agree upon a translation table among the various texts with their respective terminology and symbolic conventions for differentiation in all of its contexts.  Expertise on the subject is not required, as we are all learning from each other.

MITCSC PRESENTS:
Afternoon at the Ballpark, 2025 - Detroit Tigers at Anaheim Angels

Another baseball season, another MITCSC trip to Anaheim to see the Angels play on a Sunday afternoon.  Since going early in the season was well-received last year, we are going to making another spring trip this year, hopefully before the afternoon weather gets too warm.  We invite Caltech alums and families to join us this year!

As always, this is a fun family event.  In the past, kids have been invited onto the field to run the bases once the game has been completed, but we have not confirmed if the Angels still offer that opportunity.  Nevertheless, it promises to be a pleasant afternoon of Major League Baseball.

We will probably again suggest a pre-game gathering at the Golden Road Brewpub across the street from the stadium starting at 11:00 am. This will give everyone the chance to get lunch and not have to pay ballpark concession stand prices!  Parking is generally available at the brewery if you arrive early enough, though the brewery now charges a fee if you leave your car there for the game.  Otherwise, paid parking is available in the ballpark lots.

Learn More 2025-05-04 20:00:00 2025-05-04 23:00:00 UTC Afternoon at the Ballpark, 2025: Detroit Tigers at Anaheim Angels MITCSC PRESENTS:Afternoon at the Ballpark, 2025 - Detroit Tigers at Anaheim Angels Another baseball season, another MITCSC trip to Anaheim to see the Angels play on a Sunday afternoon.  Since going early in the season was well-received last year, we are going to making another spring trip this year, hopefully before the afternoon weather gets too warm.  We invite Caltech alums and families to join us this year! As always, this is a fun family event.  In the past, kids have been invited onto the field to run the bases once the game has been completed, but we have not confirmed if the Angels still offer that opportunity.  Nevertheless, it promises to be a pleasant afternoon of Major League Baseball. We will probably again suggest a pre-game gathering at the Golden Road Brewpub across the street from the stadium starting at 11:00 am. This will give everyone the chance to get lunch and not have to pay ballpark concession stand prices!  Parking is generally available at the brewery if you arrive early enough, though the brewery now charges a fee if you leave your car there for the game.  Otherwise, paid parking is available in the ballpark lots. Cycle the Minuteman Bikeway with Fellow MIT Alumni

Join fellow MIT alumni and other cyclists for a relaxed Thursday morning ride on the Minuteman Bikeway – one of the premier rail- trails in the U.S., designated a Millennium Trail by the White House and inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.

Starting Point: Thorndike Field Park parking lot (free parking) at 99 Margaret St, Arlington, just 0.2 miles from MBTA Alewife Station (Red Line).

Ride Details: The group will decide whether our destination will be Bedford’s Depot Park (20 miles round trip) or Lexington Common (12 miles round trip) on the paved Minuteman Bikeway. 
Pace: relaxed, ~12–14 mph.

Destination: Bedford’s Depot Park (20 miles round trip) or Lexington Common (12 miles round trip)—the group will decide. The entire ride will be on the Minuteman Bikeway at about 12–14 mph.

When: Thursdays, at 10 AM. We’ll return by approximately 11:30 AM to noon.

Indulgences: If there's interest, we’ll stop at Kickstand Café in Arlington on our way back.

Ride Status Updates: Ride status will be posted on Thursday morning, no later than 8:30 AM, at https://ihaveanidea.us/cyclemitcob/.
The event will be canceled if the organizer is unable to attend, the 10 AM forecast for Cambridge predicts a temperature <43° or probability of rain >25%.
