"MAY THE 4th BE WITH YOU" EDITION!
MIT CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PRESENTS:
MITCSC Monthly Technical Book Club
We will continue discussion on D&P Chapter IX (Geodesics) and prior topics, including Anand's solution to exercise VIII.2.1.
The Technical Book Club is reading "Tensor Geometry" by Dodson and Poston, a differential geometry-centric introduction to general relativity.  We will continue to make use of Needham's "Visual Differential Geometry & Forms" and Tu's "Differential Geometry" to elucidate D&P's Chapter IX (Geodesics).  As we get deeper into D&P, we find that the quality of exposition is slipping, so we rely more heavily on other texts to elucidate the details.  Discussion on topics covered in prior meetings is always welcomed.  One of our aims with this meeting will be to agree upon a translation table among the various texts with their respective terminology and symbolic conventions for differentiation in all of its contexts.  Expertise on the subject is not required, as we are all learning from each other.
Registration is not required, but is greatly appreciated to help our MITCSC event planning!

MITCSC PRESENTS:
Afternoon at the Ballpark, 2025 - Detroit Tigers at Anaheim Angels
Another baseball season, another MITCSC trip to Anaheim to see the Angels play on a Sunday afternoon. Since going early in the season was well-received last year, we are going to making another spring trip this year, hopefully before the afternoon weather gets too warm. We invite Caltech alums and families to join us this year!
As always, this is a fun family event. In the past, kids have been invited onto the field to run the bases once the game has been completed, but we have not confirmed if the Angels still offer that opportunity. Nevertheless, it promises to be a pleasant afternoon of Major League Baseball.
We will probably again suggest a pre-game gathering at the Golden Road Brewpub across the street from the stadium starting at 11:00 am. This will give everyone the chance to get lunch and not have to pay ballpark concession stand prices! Parking is generally available at the brewery if you arrive early enough, though the brewery now charges a fee if you leave your car there for the game. Otherwise, paid parking is available in the ballpark lots.

LA HIGH TABLE PRESENTS:
DR. JOHN VIDALE - SEISMIC SECRETS
We invite all Yale, MIT, and Princeton alums to join us for a Los Angeles High Table Mixer aimed at showcasing dynamic speakers in an intimate setting that facilitates connection with your fellow alumni. Â This in-person event features Yale alumnus and current USC Professor John Vidale â81 who will speak about his work using seismic waves to probe earthquakes and Earthâs structure. Â Come hear our speaker share sundry seismic secrets, and stay to network with fellow alums!
Date: Â Sunday, May 18th
Time: Â 1:00 â 3:30pm PDT
Location: Â We are lucky to have this event at the Hancock Park home of Sonia Molina (a Yale alum). Â The exact address will be sent to all registrants a few days before the event.
Price: Â $5. We also request you contribute to our potluck. Suggestions below.
Event format:Â 30 min mingling, 60 min High Table Program featuring Dr. John Vidale, 60 min networking and discussion post-talk with potluck refreshments.
About the speaker:
John Vidale is the Dean's Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California. Â A noted seismologist, he has worked with seismic waves in many different contexts, from the study of earthquakes to the use of seismic signals to probe the Earthâs inner core.
Dr. Vidale was born in Philadelphia and grew up in several east coast states as well as New Mexico. Â He entered Yale intending to go into physics, but soon realized he found geology more fun; he graduated in 1981 with a double BS in Physics and Geology. Â He went on to earn a PhD from Caltech in 1986, followed by researcher appointments at UC Santa Cruz and USGS in Menlo Park. Â Dr. Vidale joined UCLA as a professor in 1995 where he served as the head of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics from 2002 to 2006. Â In 2006, he moved to the University of Washington to direct the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and serve as the Washington State Seismologist. Â Dr. Vidale has been a professor at the University of Southern California since 2017. Â He is a former director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, which he led from 2017-2018.
Dr. Vidale has worked on a variety of projects related to earthquakes, Earth structure, volcanoes, and the hazards of strong shaking. Â His early work focused on applying numerical methods to study earthquakes, including a widely cited formula for tracking the arrival of seismic wavefronts on a grid. Â As the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, Dr. Vidale monitored the Cascade volcanoes, explored how the area responded to strong shaking, and quantified the impacts on bridges and tall buildings. Â He played a key role in the development of the earthquake early warning system used throughout the US west coast. Â Dr. Vidale also uses seismic waves to probe the mysteries of the Earth's core; for example, he recently found that the shape of the core is changing over time.
Dr. Vidale has received numerous awards including election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2017, American Geophysical Union's James B. Macelwane Medal in 1994, and USC Dornsife's natural science communicator of the year for 2022-2023.

Club of Austin and San Antonio
Monday, May 19, 6:00pm - 8:00pm (America/Chicago)
Event Details
MITCASA has a book club in San Antonio. We focus on popular STEM non-fiction or hard-science science fiction (not hard to read, but science-oriented) that will fit into our busy lives (no textbooks, Ph.D. theses, or thousand-page novels). We can choose other subjects, too. Each month, weâll choose books for the following month by consensus.
The thirteenth meeting will be on Monday, May 19, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Weâll meet at Romeâs Pizza at 5999 De Zavala Road, San Antonio, TX 78249. Romeâs Pizza has counter service featuring saladâs, pasta, sandwiches, desserts, and ... wait for it ⌠pizza.
This monthâs book is The Wood Age: How One Material Shaped the Whole of Human History by biology professor Roland Ennos. It is available from Amazon in paperback and hardcover form. It is also available from the San Antonio Public Library under a different title, The Age of Wood, in book, eBook, and audiobook form.
From the Amazon description:
Roland Ennosâ The Wood Age is a love-letter to the worldâs most vital and yet most threatened material. It is the story of how wood has shaped our human experience from the earliest foragers to the modern four poster bed.
âA stunning book on the incalculable debt humanity owes woodâŚâ John Carey, The Sunday Times
In a journey to appreciate how much wood matters â and has done since prehistory â Roland Ennos takes the reader chronologically through four key phases: the impact of wooded habits on the lives of primates; human emergence and the discoveries of fire and woodwork; woodâs role in an environment both pre- and post-industrialisation; and lastly, the possible future of wood in an
increasingly technologized world.
In an original and essential investigation, The Wood Age challenges the traditional model of
historical development â stone, bronze, iron â and instead guide readers through a revealing and
innovative wooded history of the world.
