2025 South Asian Graduation Celebration

This event is to celebrate the achievements of our graduates and honor the sacrifices their families made to make attending MIT a possibility. The entire MIT community (students, alumni, staff, faculty, family, friends) is invited to enjoy and be with us on this date to recognize our grads. In addition to celebrating in person, we are planning to live stream this program for our alumni, families and friends.
Register to attend the event in person or virtually by selecting the appropriate option provided in the drop down menu. All in-person tickets include refreshments at the event. If you registered as a virtual attendee, you will receive the livestream link before May 5th. Please note, we are charging a nominal fee to help offset the cost of the celebration.
For 2025 Graduates: The registration deadline to be included in the program is April 25th. Late additions may be allowed on a case-by-case basis

Power and Progress: 1000-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity

In this presentation, the 2024 Economics Nobel Prize Winner and MIT Distinguished Professor Simon Johnson will discuss how technology has been the mover of progress and prosperity for the last 1000 years. And how we must manage, navigate and share technology for mass productivity and prosperity. Professor Johnson has very interesting insights into the various rules/governance and their impact on the prosperity of the societies. For instance, how the British rule has adversely impacted the prosperity of South Asia.In its review, Guardian says that the work of Nobelists Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson shows us "how technology — ultimately the source of 85 percent of new wealth — can be used for human betterment." Times (London) says that the work discusses whether technology "will threaten social stability by increasing inequality and undermining democracy."
This event is a collaboration with the MIT Sloan Club of New York.

Feeling a little sore after the Broad Street Run? Or simply looking for a beautiful spring morning outdoors?
Come join us for a leisurely 5-mile jog along the scenic Wissahickon Valley Park gravel trail. We'll enjoy the gentle hills, river views, and fresh air together.
Afterwards we'll head to a nearby brunch spot to refuel and chat.

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) was founded in the fall of 1970. The mission of the Laboratory was to investigate the interaction of intense laser radiation with matter. LLE was established as a multidisciplinary teaching and research center for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The Laboratory has a five-fold mission:
- 1. To conduct implosion experiments and basic physics experiments in support of the National Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) program.
- 2. To develop new laser and materials technologies.
- 3. To provide graduate and undergraduate education in electro-optics, high-power lasers, high-energy-density physics, plasma physics, and nuclear fusion technology.
- 4. To operate the National Laser Users' Facility.
- 5. To conduct research and development in advanced technology related to high-energy-density phenomena.

National Weather Service Tour

The National Weather Service (NWS) has protected American lives and properties for over a century. The timely provision of reliable weather, water, climate, and environmental information has supported the Nation's social and economic development. NWS offices in communities across the United States and its territories, supported by regional and national centers, provide the authoritative information Americans need, including national, regional, state, tribal, and local authorities, to plan, prepare, mitigate, and respond to natural and human-caused events. NWS provides weather, water, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters, and ocean areas to protect life and property and enhance the national economy. These services include Forecasts and Observations, Warnings, Impact-based Decision Support Services, and Education to build a Weather-Ready Nation. The ultimate goal is to have a society prepared for and respond to weather, water, and climate events.
The tours will be conducted by a meteorologist who will go through the basics of how the National Weather Service operates and how forecasts are compiled and disseminated to the public. Participants will then be able to tour the operations area where current forecasting is taking place. Photography is permitted. The tour should last approximately one hour.
When you arrive, you may park anywhere in the parking lot. Please enter through the main door facing the road, not the side door facing the parking lot. Ring the white doorbell button on the right wall inside the vestibule, and someone will let you in.
Note: This event is limited to 30 people. Once 30 people have registered, registration will close.
The tour will begin at 1:00 PM. The tour size is limited to a maximum of 15 people. If we have more than 15 people, we will have a second tour at 2:00 PM.
