Please join the MIT Club of Puget Sound and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society for a fascinating look into the impacts of climate change on mountain peak elevations and the challenges associated with measuring their elevations.

Our speaker is Dr. Gilbertson ( MIT SB '08, SM '10, PhD '14) an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seattle University, where he teaches statics and dynamics courses, and an advanced controls class involving robotics. Dr. Gilbertson will be discussing his efforts to survey the current elevations of the five last remaining “icecap” peaks of the lower 48 states, which are all in WA (Rainier, Liberty Cap, Eldorado, Colfax, East Fury). These peaks are melting lower, and so now only two remain as icecap peaks. This ongoing lowering of these peak elevations has gone unnoticed since no one had been measuring these changes. Dr. Gilbertson received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. His masters research focused on developing a safety valve for offshore oil wells in collaboration with Chevron. His doctoral dissertation focused on controlling underwater robots in difficult acoustic communication environments, in collaboration with the Office of Naval Research. Before joining SU Dr. Gilbertson taught at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow, Russia, and at the Seattle Colleges.

We are very honored to welcome MIT Prof Moungi Bawendi 2023 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in Paris https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moungi_Bawendi
Quantum dots, one of the first engineered nanomaterials, have become ubiquitous in displays and other applications. Professor Bawendi's talk will discuss their origin story, their development, and their applications. This is a story of curiosity-based science driving innovation and technological progress.
Moungi Bawendi is the Lester Wolfe Professor of Chemistry at MIT. His lab focuses on the science and applications of nanocrystals, especially semiconductor nanocrystal (aka quantum dots). Born in Paris, Bawendi emigrated to the United States as a child, and earned his bachelor's and master's Degrees from Harvard University. He went on to achieve a PhD in chemistry from the University of Chicago. After conducting postdoctoral research at Bell Labs, he joined the MIT Chemistry faculty in 1990. In 2023, Bawendi was named a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots".

Bio:
Professor Moungi Bawendi, born in Paris, France, in 1961, is a distinguished chemist recognized for his groundbreaking work on quantum dots. After spending his early years in France and Tunisia, he moved to the United States, where he pursued higher education. He obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1988 and later conducted postdoctoral research at Bell Labs.
In 1990, Bawendi joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he became a professor in 1996. His most notable scientific contribution is the hot-injection synthesis of quantum dots, a breakthrough that enabled precise control over their size and properties, leading to wide-ranging applications in electronics, photovoltaics, and biomedical imaging.
For his pioneering work, Bawendi was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, alongside Louis E. Brus and Alexey Ekimov, for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. These nanomaterials are now essential in high-definition displays, energy-efficient lighting, medical diagnostics, and solar energy technology, revolutionizing modern technology and holding great potential for future innovations in medicine, renewable energy, and quantum computing,

Join the fourth Laugh & Learn session of the Professional Development Series!
Educators and engineers Marie-Louise Murville and Malcolm Knapp have teamed up to teach essential professional skills often overlooked in traditional education, such as conflict resolution and handling difficult people. Unlike conventional training programs, Laugh & Learn blends best-practice methodologies with humor, making skill development both engaging and enjoyable.
Participants will not only learn practical strategies for real-world challenges but also engage in role-playing exercises in private breakout sessions. You’ll even watch live demonstrations of “right way/wrong way” scenarios to reinforce key concepts.
Our fourth session is titled “Conflict Resolutions Skills – Development Path Disagreements.” (You do not need to have attended any of the earlier sessions to join the fourth!)
In this session, we explore the unique dynamics of project decision-making conflicts and why they demand approaches distinct from previous conflict types covered in our series. You'll learn techniques for crafting compelling arguments that foster resolution rather than resistance. Expect interactive role-playing, including responding to disagreements such as: 'Your idea is obviously wrong. In my 20 years of experience, I have never seen it done that way.'

Previously, she founded and built medical device/biotech company Noxilizer Corporation, was a venture capitalist with Charles River Ventures and Lazard Technology Partners, and a consultant with Arthur D. Little, Inc. She earned both a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as a Masters in Management from the London Business School.

Malcolm Knapp has over 15 years of experience as a product manager, engineer, and instructor. As a consultant, Malcolm has worked with startups across diverse sectors, including consumer, industrial, medical, and manufacturing industries. His expertise spans customer discovery, product innovation, and efficient product delivery. He is also the creator of Orbis Analysis, a cutting-edge design sprint methodology that accelerates product prototyping by identifying unknowns, resolving conflicts, and eliminating ambiguities at the earliest stages of development. Malcolm holds a combined B.A./B.S. in Science, Technology & Society, and Electrical Engineering from Pitzer College and Columbia University and a Master of Science from Columbia University.
