Annual Alumni Volunteer Awards

The Alumni Association presents several annual awards to recognize, honor, and reward outstanding accomplishments and service to the Alumni Association, to MIT and to the world. Volunteers give so much of their time, talent, and treasure to MIT and the Alumni Association, and by doing so, they allow this great institution to be one of the best in the world. Help us recognize their extraordinary contributions!

Learn More About Annual Alumni Awards

The MIT Alumni Association and fellow volunteers recognize outstanding alumni volunteer service and contributions each year through individual, group, and service awards and honors, nominated by fellow alumni and MITAA staff. Read about each award below, and submit a nomination today!

In February, the Awards Committee reviews nominations and presents its recommendations at the March meeting of the Board of Directors. Recipients are announced in the spring, and awards are presented at Tech Reunions in May and the annual Alumni Leadership Conference in September.

Individual Leadership Awards

The Bronze Beaver Award

The Bronze Beaver award is the highest honor the Association can bestow upon any alumni volunteer. It is given to recognize distinguished service to the Alumni Association and the Institute by alumni who have been active in most or all phases of alumni activity and who have been outstanding in at least one phase. Alf K. Berle ’27 and Carole (Cac) A. Clarke ’21 were the first recipients of this award, which was established in 1955. See the list of all Bronze Beaver Award winners (PDF).

The Henry B. Kane ’24 Award

The Henry B. Kane ’24 Award recognizes exceptional fundraising service and accomplishments for the Alumni Association and MIT.   See the list of all Kane Award winners (PDF).

The Harold E. Lobdell ’17 Distinguished Service Award

The Harold E. Lobdell ’17 Distinguished Service Award recognizes service to the Alumni Association and MIT that is of significant depth over a sustained period. Lobdell’s interest and commitment to MIT spanned all areas of alumni relations. See the list of all Lobdell Award winners (PDF).

The Margaret L. A. MacVicar ’65, ScD ’67 Award

The Margaret L. A. MacVicar ’65, ScD ’67 Award recognizes innovation, dedication and meaningful impact for the Alumni Association or the Institute in any area of volunteer activity, demonstrating strong potential for future volunteer leadership for the Association. Recipients will have ten or fewer cumulative years of volunteer service to the Alumni Association and/or MIT.   See the list of all MacVicar Award Winners (PDF).

The George B. Morgan ’20 Award

The George B. Morgan ’20 Award recognizes ongoing excellence in all aspects of Educational Council activity. This includes dedication to MIT, an abiding concern for the interests of prospective students, and exceptional standards of achievement and professionalism in meeting Council responsibilities.  See the list of all Morgan Award winners (PDF).

Honorary Membership in the Alumni Association

Honorary Membership in the Alumni Association: The constitution of the Alumni Association, adopted at its annual meeting held on December 30, 1897, provided that anyone who has rendered outstanding service to the Association or the Institute, including any present or former member of the Corporation or any present of former officer of administration or instruction on the staff of the Institute, as well as their spouses, may be selected an Honorary Member. See the list of all Honorary Members (PDF).

Great Dome Award

The Great Dome Award (formerly known as the Presidential Citation) is the highest honor the Association bestows upon any of its organizations. Like the Bronze Beaver for individuals, this award is given to groups in recognition of distinguished service to the Institute or the Association. Prior to 1968, outstanding organizations were given Bronze Beaver awards. See the list of all Great Dome Award winning groups (PDF).

Better World Service Award

Created in 2021, the MIT Alumni Better World Service Award honors a single alumnus who has demonstrated the ability, passion, and unwavering commitment for working wisely, creatively, and effectively to advance the MIT ideal of the betterment of humankind (building a better world). They have performed (and are preferably still performing) sustained community service that is innovative and impactful.

This award especially acknowledges grassroots activities that illustrate the broad impact individuals can have in inspiring creative and positive social change across communities in areas such as human health, climate/environment, education (K-12), community and social service or other critical needs throughout our society.
