• 8am sharp grab coffee with fellow MIT alumni & head over to the church
• 8:30 am - 12:30 pm Assemble and distribute meals to residents of Hell's Kitchen. Volunteers will pack pantry bags of shelf-stable goods and donated produce. You will be on your feet for the duration of the project and can expect to lift and transport up to 30lbs of produce.

About the speaker:

Luis Alonso, MIT Media Lab, is a research scientist in the City Science group and Principal Investigator of the Andorra Living Lab Project. He has a PhD in architecture and coordinates the Andorra Living Lab project. He oversees the integration of the group's diverse research topics (energy consumption, city simulation, urban mobility, innovation district, and smart housing) in City Science Network of Collaborative Cities, to provide comprehensive solutions for urban and country challenges, in order to transform cities into more diverse and vibrant "human scale ecosystems."

Since he is focused on very different lines of research and work, his antidisciplinary approach fits on the Media Lab philosophy: City Science, urban indicators, big data analysis, urban planning, architectural robotics, building design and construction, new and smart materials (free-form transparent energy efficient envelopes and biomedical uses), energy simulation and building efficiency and sustainability, eco-innovation, e-learning and its impact on social networks, new technologies, IoT, etc.

The Alumni Club of MIT is excited to invite you to an engaging dinner session with Dr. José María García and Dr. Antonio Parente, both founders of Lipotec in the year 1987 that was bought in 2012 by the fund Berkshire Hathaway of Warren Buffet. Both entrepreneurs have created along the years new start-ups like DiverDrugs, GP Pharma, BCN Peptides, Lipofoods, Prima Derm, Lipo True, etc. Today some of them are fully consolidated and successful in the cosmetic (Prima Derm) and pharma (GP Pharm) sectors.

 

José María´s and Antonio´s talk will focus on their career and professional pathway, and they will examine the key factors needed to create successful startups and how to evaluate investment opportunities as a venture capitalist in the domain of Pharma and Cosmetic industry. This will be followed by a Q&A session from the attendees that will have also time for networking.

The event will take place at the premises of the Restaurant Pomarada in Barcelona.

José María is currently Chairman of Goaf Holding, a family investment vehicle that has a dozen investee companies dedicated to research and development (biotechnology, health, cosmetics, agriculture), renewable energies and real estate projects.

He has been a renowned entrepreneur, founder of numerous innovative technology companies in the biotechnology sector.

José María obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry at the University of Barcelona and his PhD at the Spanish National Research Council.

Antonio Parente. Biography

Antonio is currently President and founder of GP Pharm. He is also an Advisory Director and/or Business Angel of 10 biotechnology companies.

He has co-founded several biotechnology companies where he has held different positions. On the other hand, he has been Vice President of ASEBIO (Spanish Association of Biotechnology Companies) and Catalonia Bio (Business Association of Biotechnology Companies)

Antonio obtained his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona and his PhD from the Spanish National Research Council. He also holds an MBA from ESADE and a PADE from IESE.

EE (MIT) Please join the Class of 1992 for a virtual Tim Talk by Newton Agrawal, MD, PhD, S.B. EE. This event will take place on Tuesday, October 29th at 8pm ET (5pm PT). Abstract:  In recent years, the fields of psychiatry and mental health have witnessed remarkable advancements driven by science and technology, revolutionizing how we understand, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders. This talk explores how modern innovations—such as repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), ketamine-based therapies, psychedelics, and precision medicine—are transforming traditional psychiatric care, offering new hope to patients, especially those resistant to conventional treatments. Furthermore, we delve into the role of digital therapeutics, telepsychiatry, social media, brain-computer interfaces, neuromodulation, robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning in expanding access to care, personalizing treatment, and improving patient outcomes. This presentation will also address the challenges that arise alongside these breakthroughs, such as the long-term implications of emerging treatments. By blending cutting-edge scientific research with real-world patient outcomes, this talk provides an in-depth look at how the intersection of neuroscience, technology, and psychiatry is shaping the future of mental health care. Through these innovations, we are moving beyond symptom management to truly empower patients and bring about lasting healing. This talk will highlight not only the exciting possibilities ahead in emerging markets but also the essential role of technological expertise in continuing to drive progress in mental health treatment.   Bio:           I worked in a combination of research, industry and academics throughout my career after MIT. I first pursued laser application research to medicine. Then I worked as software engineer in the financial, high-tech semiconductor Silicon Valley and Hollywood entertainment industries. I then entered medical school and pursued two independent doctorates simultaneously across the U.S. and Canada, where I completed my MSc and PhD in neuroscience at McGill in Montreal, concentrating on complex neural systems and the cell biology of excitable tissues as well as side work in bio-informatics in completing the plant genome, the third of all genomes. While doing this I was also completing my MD in the United States. I started my medical training in Oklahoma and finished my medical training in inner city Chicago hospitals. I did post-doctoral research at Rush University Department of Neurosurgery, Parkinson’s and Stereotactic Movement Disorders group where I was involved in Deep Brain Stimulation research. I continued Intraoperative Clinical Neuromonitoring post-doctoral work at The University of Chicago Hospitals in the Department of Neurosurgery and Department of Neurology. I spent a summer at Harvard Medical School MGH Department of Neurosurgery. I returned back to The University of Chicago. I then completed psychiatric residency training at Quillen in Northeast Tennessee and worked with the severely underserved population of Appalachia. Thereafter I worked in inpatient psychiatric care in Florida hospitals before and during the pandemic. Before this I realized a strong need for telehealth and interestingly the pandemic helped make and force this dream to a fruition. During all this time until recently, I served as Treasurer and officer for several years for the EEG Clinical Neurosciences Society, which has been a major force in helping advance objective diagnostics and technological treatment strategies in mental health. I then transferred to California where I worked at the Loma Linda VA Medical Center during the entire pandemic doing acute critical care inpatient psychiatry for veterans. I also continued to treat patients at Bay Care hospitals near Tampa Bay/Clearwater using telehealth also during the pandemic. Over the past year, I have been a psychiatrist at Mindful Health Solutions, which is an rTMS and ketamine treatment corporation serving all of California, and where my offices are located in Newport Beach, California. I also continue to treat the underserved, poor, disadvantaged and refugee populations of San Diego through Operation Samahan, a federally qualified nonprofit program with over 50 years of community service. In addition, I have retained my interest in clothing design, wearable technology and manufacturing through my companies Med-Line and Swurly Clothing Company. I have given talks in wearable technologies at the Wear Conferences, most recently in Seattle, Washington.  I am an expert in psychopharmacology medication management, neuromodulation and alternative therapeutics. Join MIT alumni volunteering in our community. This event is part of an ongoing volunteer initiative with events every other month.

• 8am sharp grab coffee with fellow MIT alumni & head over to the church
• 8:30 am - 12:30 pm Assemble and distribute meals to residents of Hell's Kitchen. Volunteers will pack pantry bags of shelf-stable goods and donated produce. You will be on your feet for the duration of the project and can expect to lift and transport up to 30lbs of produce.
