Toast to IAP FAQ
What is IAP?
The Independent Activities Period (IAP) is a special term at MIT that runs from early January until the end of the month. IAP provides members of the MIT community (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) with a unique opportunity to organize, sponsor and participate in a wide variety of activities, including how-to sessions, forums, athletic endeavors, lecture series, films, tours, recitals, and contests. Visit the IAP website for more information and a list of offerings for the current year.
What location is best for this type of event?
Remember that “IAP offerings are distinguished by their variety, innovative spirit and fusion of fun and learning”. What your club decides to do around this theme is completely up to you, but you may want to consider some things other clubs have done in the past. For example, in 2016 the MIT Club of Chicago hosted a maker space presentation on modern prototyping. You might also like to consider a sporting activity, game night, lecture, or contest. Whichever type of venue you choose make sure the space is accessible to all members of your club and easily fosters a community environment.
When should I create my event registration?
Aim to have your registration page prepared at least a month prior to your event.
How much should these events cost?
These are great events to market aggressively to younger alumni. We highly recommend that these events are free or lower priced. If the budget allows, many clubs will provide complimentary appetizers, and have a cash bar to offset costs.
How should be event be marketed?
You should do promotion similar to other events your group offers but with the holiday season around the corner we recommend that you plan your marketing ahead of time. Consider sending a save the date in the weeks leading up to your event so guests can put it on their calendar before the holiday season.
Will the Alumni Association be distributing a Toast to IAP Quiz?
For Toast to IAP the Alumni Association will not be sending out a quiz. In recent years participation in the quiz dwindled. Instead we encourage you to re-connect with the spirit of IAP, learn something-teach something!
