How to Steward Volunteers
Support your Volunteer
- Provide a clear statement of the role and responsibilities and time commitment.
- Provide a timeline and task lists to ensure a mutual understanding of expectations.
- Be sure they have the necessary information and technical tools to fulfill responsibilities and achieve success.
- The best stewardship is satisfaction in the volunteer role.
Build Rapport with your Volunteer
- Check in to be sure your volunteers feel included and useful.
- Seek their input and ideas for improvements and changes.
- Strengthen their relationship with MIT.
- Learn what their expectations are for future roles.
Communicate with your Volunteer
- Communicate regularly with individual volunteers.
- Provide your personal contact information and respond quickly to questions and concerns.
Recognize your Volunteer
- Foster a culture of appreciation.
- Share impact reports highlighting the contribution of individual volunteers as well as committees.
- Nominate them for awards.
Thank your Volunteer
- Thank them personally for their loyalty and commitment to MIT.
- Arrange for expressions of thanks from other members of the MIT community.
- There is no such thing as too many "Thank You's."
