Diversity and Inclusion Policies
Fundamental Ideas to Guide & Strengthen our Work
Both MIT as a whole and the MIT Alumni Association have strong policies celebrating diversity, promoting inclusion and discouraging discrimination on any level.
The Association requires all alumni communities to observe the Institute's policy on diversity and inclusion. This includes maintaining a diverse representation within clubs and groups and extends to officers, board members, and event attendees.
Diversity can pertain to social factors like race, gender identity, ethnicity, etc. as well as things like communication and learning styles, experience and personality types, and age and geographic location. The Association's commitment to a diverse community stimulates a culture of learning and understanding, and enhances the alumni experience.
Additionally, the Alumni Association and Office of Resource Development staff have formed a Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, which aims to develop programs and provide ongoing communication about diversity and inclusion topics within the community. This group has also developed a written compact for the community:
"The MIT Advancement community commits itself to a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and accessible workplace within our teams and the broader MIT community. Our shared values of ethical integrity and accountability are built upon a foundation of respect, safety, and kindness. Further, we commit the resources and investment necessary to achieve these goals and uphold these values.
We appreciate the inherent strengths, viewpoints, and challenges we each bring to our work. We draw on these to empower one another across all levels of our organization to engage in open, courageous, and effective dialogue to build a stronger community and affirm the perspectives, experiences, and identities each person brings to their role. By embracing our differences, we increase our ability to build collaborative and respectful relationships. Each of us will uphold the values articulated in this statement by taking action every day to positively impact both individuals and the organization as a whole in an effort to build and sustain an equitable, effective, and welcoming work community."
Though this group works largely planning programs for staff, the pillars of this message apply to all our communities and demonstrate our commitment to this policy.
