Figure:  cleaved edge of 50-nm-thick semiconductor membrane -- with 100-nm-thick ridge guide structure.  This structure represents a class of semiconductor waveguides with properties such as low propagation loss, low nonlinearity, low dispersion, and low optical-mode-overlap with the semiconductor.
