Andreas Langousis was born in Athens in 1981. He is a Civil Engineer (National Technical University of Athens, NTUA, 2003), with Master of Science (MSc 2005) and Doctor of Science (ScD 2009) degrees from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has served as Professor of several undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil Engineering related to probability theory and statistics, random field theory, stochastic processes, catastrophe risk, hydraulic structures, urban hydraulic works, rural and urban hydrology, environmental data analysis, and numerical analysis, at different Institutions in USA and Europe. Currently, he holds a Professor position in the area of Engineering Hydrology, Hydraulics and Hydrologic Risk Assessment at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Patras, and an Adjunct Professor position at the School of Science and Technology of the Hellenic Open University. In September 2017 he was nominated the “Professeur Associé” honorary status at INRS Université de Recherche in Quebec (Canada), for the 4-year period 2018 – 2022 he served as the Chair of the scientific committee of the Precipitation and Climate Sub-Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), and for the period Sep. 2020 – Sep. 2022 he served as the Director of the Geotechnical Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering Division of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Patras. In June 2022 he was announced Editor in Chief (EiC) of Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment (SERRA), since July 2023 he serves as Hydrological Advisor to the Permanent Representative of Greece to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO|UN Office), and since September 2023 he serves as the Director of the Geotechnical Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering Division of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Patras.

His research to date has resulted in multiple fellowships, academic awards, and distinctions, including the Schoettler Fellowship of MIT for academic accomplishments, a 5-year scholarship from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, a best paper award at the 1st International Summit on Hurricanes and Climate Change, a 3-year Postdoctoral Fellowship from the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (Greece), and a 2-year Research Fellowship from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. In 2017, one of his innovative research articles published in Water Resources Research (WRR) received the Editors’ Highlight, while in 2021 another paper co-authored by him received the Water 2021 Best Paper Award (Rank 2, https://doi.org/10.3390/w11050910).

He has participated in 27 research projects, co-authored more than 55 peer-reviewed research articles in international scientific Journals, more than 80 presentations at international conferences, 4 peer-reviewed invited book chapters, 1 educational textbook on engineering design of water supply and sewerage works (ISBN: 978-960-9427-89-0), 4 newspaper articles (popular science), and served as an active member of the organizing and scientific committees of more than 25 international conferences. In addition, he has given more than 20 invited lectures and talks, and currently serves as Editor in Chief of SERRA (Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment), Associate Editor of WRR (Water Resources Research), and as Reviewer in more than 20 international scientific Journals. For the period 2013-2022 he served as Associate Editor of SERRA, for the 6-year period 2016 -2022 he served as Associate Editor of JoH (Journal of Hydrology), for the 4-year period 2016 – 2020 he served as Associate Editor of HSJ (Hydrological Sciences Journal), for the period Jun. 2012 – Dec. 2013 he served as Guest Associate Editor of HESS (Hydrology and Earth System Sciences), and for the period Jun. 2015- Jun. 2017 he served as Managing Guest Editor of JoH.

He is an active member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the European Geosciences Union (EGU), the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), and the International Commission on Statistical Hydrology (ICSH-IAHS). Since 2008, he serves as an active member of the scientific committee of the Precipitation and Climate Sub-Division of EGU, during the period 2010-2012 he was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Chapter of ASCE, for the period 2011-2013 he served as Treasurer of the Alexander S. Onassis Scholars’ Association, since March 2014 he serves Member of the Examination Committee of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG) for the conferment of professional rights to Civil Engineers, since May 2018, he serves as Member of the Educational Council of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) for incoming students, and since April 2020 he serves as Member of the Academic Council of Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.

Andreas Langousis’ area of expertise is the development of stochastic models and methods for the probabilistic description of natural and engineered systems, for risk assessment, prediction, design and control. His current research interests include (but are not limited to): hydrologic/hydroclimatic variability and climate change impact assessment, scale invariant phenomena, fractals and multifractals, hydroclimatic and environmental risk quantification, catastrophe risk and management of claims, health risk modeling, statistical downscaling and forecasting, storm-based flood risk estimation and mapping, probabilistic estimation of water losses in water distribution networks (WDNs), burst detection and localization, statistical estimation of water demand/consumption, optimal sizing of pressure management areas, development of smart solutions for water loss reduction, backflow propagation in sewerage networks, as well as reliability analysis and risk management and design of man-made and engineered systems.
