Non-Reunion-Year Best Practices

Keep Up the Momentum Between Reunions

You need a team to lead a class. All class officers share collective responsibility for keeping classmates connected and informed throughout their five-year term of office. Consider these best practices for keeping your class engaged during non-reunion years.

Set the example

  • Submit information to Class Notes and assist the secretary in seeking news from classmates
  • Make annual gift to MIT, particularly in support of the class project
  • Attend class events
  • Pay class dues

Work with other officers

  • Keep other officers informed of relevant class news (e.g. the new class fund scholarship recipient)
  • Copy fellow officers on correspondence pertaining to class business
  • Hold meetings that include all class officers on a regular basis
  • Help Webmaster keep class Web site fresh, relevant, and up-to-date
  • Ensure that your class is represented by at least one officer each year at the Alumni Leadership Conference
  • Work together to identify and recruit additional leaders to serve as future officers and volunteers
  • Consider ways not only to fulfill your own responsibilities as an officer, but provide support for your fellow leaders in fulfilling their roles
  • Nominate outstanding volunteers for the Volunteer Honor Roll or one of the volunteer awards or leadership positions

Conduct ongoing activities

Many classes conduct frequent activities in non-reunion years. As a result, they reap the benefits as they come into their reunion years—specifically, increased participation in reunion events and giving. Classes that have achieved this level of success are most often led by officers who choose to maintain an ongoing dialogue throughout their five-year terms.
