NEWScience Policy

Written by the Assistant Director of MIT’S DC Office, NEWScience Policy provides a weekly summary of activities and events in Washington, DC affecting science, technology, and innovation policy. While not meant to be exhaustive, it highlights items related to the funding for and execution of basic research across disciplines, and the translation of discoveries into the marketplace.

MIT Washington, DC Office

The mission of the MIT Washington Office, an organization within MIT President’s office, is to represent the Institute in Washington as one of the nation's premier academic institutions. This office maintains a continuous flow of information between MIT and the federal government. The staff of the Washington Office is involved in the gathering and disseminating of information to the MIT campus concerning government activities and actions. The staff also makes MIT's resources available to federal officials, facilitating the sharing of these resources with Congress, the Administration, associated federal agencies, and other national organizations.

Association of American Universities (AAU)

The AAU is a nonprofit association of 59 U.S. and two Canadian preeminent public and private research universities. Founded in 1900, AAU focuses on national and institutional issues that are important to research-intensive universities, including funding for research, research and education policy, and graduate and undergraduate education.

The Science Coalition

The mission of the Science Coalition is to expand and strengthen the federal government’s investment in university-based scientific, medical, engineering and agricultural research. 

The Task Force on American Innovation

Formed in 2004, the Task Force is an alliance of America's most innovative companies, leading research universities, and largest scientific societies. 
Our mission is to support scientific research in the physical sciences and engineering.  Federal research investment has fallen to historic lows as a share of our gross domestic product, raising concerns that we're not investing an adequate share of today's resources to support the innovations of tomorrow.

Science and Policy Technology Institute

STPI is a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) chartered by Congress. It provides rigorous and objective analysis of science and technology (S&T) policy issues for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and other offices and councils within the executive branch of the U.S. government and federal agencies.

President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

PCAST is an advisory group of the nation’s leading scientists and engineers who directly advise the President and the Executive Office of the President. PCAST makes policy recommendations in the many areas where understanding of science, technology, and innovation is key to strengthening our economy and forming policy that works for the American people. PCAST is administered by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

STEM Education Coalition

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Coalition works to support STEM programs for teachers and students at the U. S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies that offer STEM related programs. The STEM Education Coalition represents all sectors of the technological workforce – from knowledge workers, to educators, to scientists, engineers, and technicians. The participating organizations of the STEM Education Coalition are dedicated to ensuring quality STEM education at all levels.

U.S. Science Policy in the 21st Century (book)

This textbook offers a comprehensive survey of national science policy looking at how policies for science are made, the government entities that make these policies, and the impact federal policies have on the conduct of science.

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA)

NASFAA supports the training, diversity, and professional development of financial aid administrators; advocates for public policies and programs that increase student access to and success in postsecondary education; and serves as a forum for communication and collaboration on student financial aid issues.

Federal Student Aid

Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education, ensures that all eligible individuals can benefit from federally funded financial assistance for education beyond high school. They champion the promise of postsecondary education to all Americans —and its value to our society.
