The 2005 Alumni Leadership Conference (ALC) brought more than 400 MIT volunteers and guests to campus Sept. 23-24 to honor outstanding volunteers and to brainstorm new ways to strengthen the alumni network and raise funds for MIT. The weekend gathered volunteers of all ages, from San Francisco to Lebanon, for networking, leadership and community-building workshops, updates on research and goals, and celebration.
"I have seen the spectacular benefit that MIT gets from its incredibly devoted alumni," MIT President Susan Hockfield told the plenary audience—then urged them to tell MIT's story in their communities. "I view this group as our information army and your dedication and help in spreading the news about MIT is important beyond description. The nation desperately needs the kind of inspiration that comes out of MIT."
Echoes of the ALC theme, Celebrating Excellence, reverberated throughout the weekend, from the keynote speech on leadership, to the awards dinner honoring volunteers, to the faculty research presentations. "Every volunteer here helps to increase the visibility of MIT and helps the world to understand the excellence that lies within," Alumni Association President Scott P. Marks Jr. '68 told conference participants. Indeed, alumni volunteers serve in numerous roles for the Institute: as educational counselors; class, club, and affinity group officers; fundraisers; and Enterprise Forum members, and ALC serves as an opportunity for all volunteers to learn from one another.
Leaders honored for extraordinary efforts
ALC celebrated the hard work and dedication alumni provide to the Institute with annual awards, including the prestigious Bronze Beaver. This year marked the 50 th anniversary of this award, which is given in recognition of distinguished service to the Institute and/or the Alumni Association.
