From the geologic marvels of its glacial fjords and eerie thermal springs to its richly diverse wildlife and colorful native traditions, New Zealand is one of the world's most breathtaking paradises. Learn more and register (PDF)

Join fellow MIT alums and explore its many treasures on a cruise aboard the intimate Clipper Odyssey from lively Queenstown and the world-famous Milford Sound on the South Island, to the Bay of Islands and the port of Auckland on the North Island. Isolated from other land masses by the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, these lush green islands are a world unto themselves, offering refuge to some of the planet’s rarest species. They are also home to the indigenous Maori, whose spiritual connection with nature manifests itself in a strong identification with the mountain, lake, or coastline where they live.

Observe the shy and rare yellow-eyed penguin, the bubbling mud pots of geothermal activity, and the glacial beauty of Fiordland. Witness the skilled hands of expert Maori woodcarvers and learn about the historical, cultural, and natural wonders of New Zealand. During our journey, MIT Professor of Atmospheric Science Ronald Prinn ScD’71, a native New Zealander, will update us on the effects of climate change both globally and on New Zealand. He will be joined by expedition leader Michael Deaker, also a native of New Zealand. MIT is sharing this adventure with travelers from The Commonwealth Club, the University of Michigan, and Emory University.

Following the main program, we are offering a three-night optional extension in Sydney, Australia.

*For the free air ticket, the following restrictions apply:

  • Subject to availability (limited number of seats still available)
  • The air ticket must be booked through High Country Passage (the tour operator).
  • The offer is valid only for economy class.
  • The offer is valid only for flights from San Francisco to New Zealand, to and from the main tour. It is not valid for those taking the extension.

To reserve your space on this program, please call the MIT Alumni Travel Program at 800-992-6749 or email the Travel Program at compass@mit.edu.
