Itinerary
Rome, "the eternal city," and Florence, often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, form the bookends of this special program celebrating the glories of Italian history, culture, and cuisine.
Between these two great cities, marvel at the breathtaking beauty of Bonifacio on the island of Corsica, lovely Sardinia, and Napoleon's residence in exile, Elba. Begin with two nights at Bernini Bristol Hotel, Rome. With a five nights stay, there is ample time to relish the exhilarating sailing experience for which the Sea Cloud is renowned. The program concludes with three nights at Grand Hotel Villa Medici in Florence. To learn more about this program download the trip brochure. (PDF)
Our trip will be hosted by Samuel Jay Keyser HM, professor emeritus in MIT's Department of Linguistics and Philosophy and currently special assistant to the Chancellor. He will be accompanied by his wife, Nancy Kelly, who retired from MIT after more than three decades as an administrator in the President's Office. During the trip, Jay will record our journey in his own words, reading excerpts as we go, and Nancy will photograph our travels. This Italy program will mark the 14th trip they have hosted for MIT.
In addition, we are pleased to have Inge Jackson Reist, an art expert at the Frick Collection in New York City, and Jenifer Neils, a classical archaeologist and professor at Case Western Reserve University, as our study leaders. This program is limited to 56 travelers; in addition to MIT alumni, members of the Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian will also be traveling on this program. This trip has a level 1 physical activity rating.
