September 21, 2011

The application process begins. Students may apply for up to three externship opportunities.

September 22, 2011

We will host an Information Session at 6:30 p.m. in 32-141. Please come with questions about the application process!

October 12, 2011, NOON

FINAL deadline for students to submit Externship opportunities.

Deadline for all applications to be submitted online. Note: No applications will be accepted after this date and time. Once submitted, no changes may be made to applications. Check for typos and errors before you submit.

October 14-November 4, 2011

After online review of student applications, sponsors may contact students directly for in-person or telephone interviews before making their decisions. During this time, students may withdraw applications from consideration if they wish. However, no new applications will be accepted.

November 4, 2011, 5:00 p.m.

Last day for students to withdraw applications from consideration before the matching process begins. Email notification to externship@mit.edu.

November 14, 2011

First round of students notified of their match to an externship. They must accept or decline this match by November 16, 5:00 p.m.

November 21, 2011

Second round matches for previously unmatched students announced. Students who declined a match on November 16 are not eligible. Students matched in the second round must accept or decline their match by November 23, 5:00 p.m.

Week of November 28, 2011

All students who accepted their match:

  • He or she must sign a waiver release form (PDF) and return it when attending the required program orientation.
  • He or she must contact sponsors about the externship work schedule, transportation, and, if offered, housing arrangements.

December 14 or 15, 2011, 6:30 p.m.

All accepted students must attend one of the orientation sessions (32-155).

January 9-February 3, 2012: IAP 2012

Students participate in externships worldwide.
