Szuminski Injury Sidelines the MIT Pitcher
Jason Szuminski '01, MIT's first graduate to make it to the Big Show of major league baseball, knows no show is without the occasional intermission. Shoulder tendonitis had prevented Szuminski from pitching in the still young 2005 Triple A baseball season as of mid May. He was released at the end of spring training by the Iowa Cubs, but remains confident he can get back in the game. "It's taken a little longer than expected to clear up," Szuminski says of his shoulder problems this season. "But I am throwing again and hope to be back to AAA Iowa around the end of the month." Szuminski was traded to the Chicago Cubs after working his way into the majors last April with the San Diego Padres, where he faced the likes of slugger Barry Bonds. Then Clubs sent him to their Triple A farm team in Des Moines. There he pitched 56 innings in 46 games last season finishing with a respectable 4.53 ERA in route to the Triple A Central Division Championship. The Iowa Cubs are off to a 12-21 start and are currently in the cellar of the Central Division. Since the season began, the Chicago Cubs have called up five pitchers from its Triple A affiliate. Wherever he may end up pitching this year, Szuminski has been around long enough to know how hard work leads to opportunities. |
