The MIT Alumni Association is issuing a call for proposals for MIT's 2010 electronic holiday greeting. If you can channel the Institute's brilliance, creativity, and distinctive quirkiness, please participate!

About the Greeting

The 2010 holiday greeting will be electronic, like last year's. It will be sent by MIT President Susan Hockfield and the Alumni Association to an audience of some 150,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends. 

Eligibility

MIT students or other community members may participate. Contestants may work individually or in teams.

Prizes

Cash prizes of $1,000 and $500 will be awarded to the winner and runner up, respectively. The winner will also receive credit, wide exposure, and the opportunity to have his or her work viewed and approved by President Hockfield.

Criteria

The electronic holiday greetings must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Ninety seconds or less
  • The MIT logo and the words "Happy Holidays" must appear in some form
  • Secular (no religious connotations or imagery, such as Christmas trees, wreaths, menorah, etc.)
  • Cutting edge
  • Technically sophisticated
  • Artistically elegant
  • Quirky, geeky even!
  • Representative of MIT's ingenuity and culture and of MIT student and faculty character
  • Cross-generational appeal
  • Compatible across multiple platforms, browsers, and smart phones
  • Viewable on smart phones (or please include scaled-down version for mobile devices)
  • May be interactive, but see line above
  • Model releases are mandatory for any recognizable subjects
  • May not contain copyrighted music or images

How to Enter

Submit proposals to mitaacomm@mit.edu by 12 P.M. EST on September 20, 2010; subject line: "Holiday Greeting Submission." Proposals must include the following:

  • A brief description of your concept for the 2010 electronic holiday greeting. Be sure to keep the aforementioned criteria in mind, and feel free use any combination of writing, technology, imagery, and/or storyboards to articulate your idea.
  • Course / dept. affiliation at MIT
  • Example(s) of your related work
  • Name(s) of creator(s) and contact info

Deadlines

Proposals due: September 20, 2010, noon

Finalists selected to advance: September 24, 2010

Completed projects due: October 11, 2010

Winner selected: October 18, 2010

Revisions completed by: November 8, 2010

General Conditions

By entering this contest, you agree to work with the greeting team in an iterative process to produce a final product that will ultimately be approved by President Hockfield. The holiday greeting committee reserves the right to decline selection of a winner should the submitted solutions not meet the standards of the selection committee.

  • Can I submit multiple proposals?
    Yes.
  • You said we have to include the MIT logo somewhere in our holiday greeting. Where can I find a high-res copy of it?
