Student Group Resources

The MIT Alumni Association is available to consult with student groups in regard to their alumni. FSILGs, athletic teams, and student activities groups may be particularly interested in forging strong connections with the alumni who participated in those activities during their time at MIT.

Requesting Alumni Contact Information

If you would like to send a mailing or email announcement to your alumni constituency, please contact aa-student-services@mit.edu with your request.

Alumni Event Planning Assistance

We recommend that student groups begin planning for an event that will include alumni 10-14 weeks prior to the event date. Below is a recommended planning timeline:

  • Finalize event details(1-2 weeks prior to printing) (speaker and location selection/negotiation, venue and/or catering confirmation)
  • Printing of materials (2 weeks prior to mail date)
  • Mail date, first class postage (1 week prior to desired receipt by alumni)
  • Publicity materials received by alumni (3-4 weeks prior to RSVP deadline)
  • RSVP deadline (3-5 days prior to final count due date)
  • Final attendance count due to venue, catering (3-5 days prior to event)
Contact aa-student-services@mit.edu if you would like to schedule a meeting to discuss an event.

Creating Alumni Email Lists

There are two kind of email lists that can be created for your group's alumni relations purposes:

  • A discussion list which requires that interested alumni sign up. Anyone can send messages to this kind of list.
  • An announcement list which automatically signs up all alumni from your group. Alumni can request to be removed from the list. This list can only have one or two designated individuals that can post messages to the list.
If you are interested in creating an alumni email list, please contact aa-student-services@mit.edu.

Finding an Alumnus Speaker for Your Event

If you are looking for an alumnus speaker, start by searching the ICAN database. This database lists alumni interested in serving in career advisory roles and also indicates those who are willing to speak at MIT events.

If you cannot find someone of interest using the ICAN database, please send your request to aa-student-services@mit.edu.

Alumni Friend Raising

The Alumni Association encourages groups to contact their alumni in an effort to keep alumni more informed about current happenings at MIT. If your group is planning an alumni event, or would simply like to inform them of current activities within your group, we can provide you with the contact information and phones to do so. Calling is restricted to evening hours so as not to disturb alumni (7:00 pm - 10:00 pm Eastern Standard Time).

Reid Weedon FSILG Alumni Relations Award

The D. Reid Weedon, Jr. '41 FSILG Alumni/ae Relations Award was established by Mr. Weedon to encourage alumni participation in the FSILG system.

The award is presented at the Institute Award Convocation each May to the Fraternity, Sorority or Independent Living Group that has demonstrated the greatest effort in alumni relations in a given academic year.

The award is administered by the Alumni Association and is accompanied by a cash prize ($6,000). Additionally, this year we are offering a $1,500 prize, to be awarded at the Selection Committee’s discretion to the FSILG that merits special consideration for its alumni relations efforts.

For more information, please visit the D. Reid Weedon '41 Award Page.

For more information on services for the FSILG community, please visit the FSILG Toolkit.
