Class Webmaster Toolkit

The position of class webmaster has taken on increased importance in recent years, as more alumni use the web to find information about MIT and their class. Class web pages provide almost unlimited capacity for webmasters to post information, and are very useful tools for the class officers and members.

If you are working on designing or updating a web page for your class, you can get some ideas from looking at other class pages.

Tips for Creating an Effective Class Web Site

A well-constructed web site is built with the user in mind. Ease of navigation is essential, with information readily available. With this in mind, here are a few things to be aware of when developing a comprehensive class web site.

  • Keep it simple: Make information obvious and easy to find.
  • Keep it current: Update your page with information about class activities, your class project, or messages from your class officers.
  • Include links to relevant sites. Some suggested links are included below.
  • Include names and contact information for class officers.
  • Don't use too many graphics or images. While they may have esthetic value, they will slow down the browser of the user.

Class Web Sites in Reunion Years

If your class is approaching a reunion, update your web site to make sure it includes current reunion information. Your web site can be a great way to get your classmates excited about the upcoming festivities and to encourage attendance. Here is some information you may want to include:

  • Reunion dates.
  • Schedule of events, both class specific and the General Tech Reunions schedule.
  • Names and contact information for reunion chair, reunion committee, reunion gift chair, and reunion gift committee.
  • Links to the your class reunion Web page which can be found on the Tech Reunions home page and web sites of event locations off campus.
  • A message from the reunion gift chair and updates on reunion gift results.

Online Resources

The Alumni Association staff has compiled a set of reference pages for webmasters hosting their sites on the Association server.
