Class Activities

The activities and character of MIT’s classes are nearly as varied as those of its individual alumni. Nevertheless, all class activities share a common focus on MIT and the MIT experience. Class activities can generally be described in three categories:

  • providing connections (social, intellectual and professional) among the graduates themselves,
  • strengthening ties to MIT and its mission of academic excellence, and
  • encouraging alumni and alumnae to provide financial support.

Reunions

Reunions are the principal activities of MIT classes. Traditionally, class reunions take place every five years during graduation week, usually one of the first weekends in June. A reunion reacquaints classmates with one another and renews connections to MIT. It is a time of relaxation and fun, and for many classes, includes a dose of intellectual content – just to remind members that being at Tech is “like drinking from a fire hose.”

A complete Reunion Planning Toolkit is available to help you.

Mini-Reunions

Some classes arrange mini-reunion events in non-reunion years. For example, the Class of 1997 celebrated a Pi Reunion exactly 3.14 years past graduation. Other classes join with contiguous classes celebrating reunions for one or more events. For several years the classes of ’47, ’48, and ’49 have organized joint activities around Technology Day and Tech Night at the Pops. During reunions many classes arrange to meet faculty or students who benefit directly from their class projects.
