Nominations for Awards

The Alumni Association presents several annual awards to recognize, honor, and reward outstanding accomplishment and service to the Alumni Association and MIT.

Every year at this time, we invite volunteers and staff to submit nominations for these awards. Volunteers give so much of their time, talent, and treasure to MIT and the Alumni Association, and by doing so, they allow this great institution to be one of the best in the world. Help us recognize their extraordinary contributions.

Nominations for 2012 consideration were due by November 18, 2011. However, we welcome nominations at any time throughout the year for future year consideration.

Bronze Beaver AwardThe Bronze Beaver Award is the highest honor the Association can bestow upon any alumni volunteer. It is given to recognize distinguished service to the Alumni Association and/or the Institute.

Henry B. Kane '24 AwardThe Kane Award is given in recognition of exceptional service and accomplishments in the area of fundraising for the Institute.

Harold E. Lobdell '17 Distinguished Service AwardThe Lobdell Award is given in recognition of alumni relations service of special depth over a sustained period.

George B. Morgan '20 AwardThe Morgan Award recognizes sustained excellence in all aspects of Educational Council activity. This includes dedication to MIT, an abiding concern for the interests of prospective students, and exceptional standards of achievement and professionalism in meeting Council responsibilities.

Great Dome AwardThe Great Dome Award recognizes distinguished service to the Alumni Association and MIT by alumni organizations. Like the Bronze Beaver for individuals, this award is given to groups in recognition of distinguished service to the Institute or the Association.

Honorary Membership in the Alumni AssociationThe constitution of the Alumni Association states, "anyone who has rendered outstanding service to the Association or the Institute" may be elected to Honorary Membership. This includes any present or former member of the Corporation, any present or former officer of administration or instructor on the staff of the Institute, as well as their spouses.

Please keep in mind that this is a highly selective process. A thoughtful, substantive, and robust statement in support of your nominee is very important in helping the committee with its selections. Here are some points to consider in presenting your nominee: How has this nominee been an especially effective MIT volunteer? Why should this nominee be held up as a model for other MIT volunteers? Include anecdotes from your experience working/collaborating with the nominee that speaks towards her/his leadership, resourcefulness, impact. Talk to other MIT alumni, faculty, Institute staff who may have intereacted with this individual. For Great Dome Award nominations, provide a brief description of the event/group and indicate why it was exemplary and could serve as a model for others;How was the work/project/contribution transformational, what impact did it have? Reviewing past award winner profiles may also be helpful.
